Weekend travel mayhem continues in London after major disruption hit Kings Cross station this morning, with trains cancelled until the evening.

For those on summer holiday hoping for a smooth journey, it has been anything but after major train lines at Kings Cross were shut. Revelers heading to Edinburgh Fringe in the Scottish capital faced train cancellations.

It comes after damage to the overhead wires, meaning trains running between London, Cambridge and Peterborough are likely to be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised until the end of the day.

While lines have reopened, trains are still being cancelled, sparking LNER to issue a fresh ‘do not travel’ warning after ‘more cancellations than normal.’

Several train companies were affected by the chaos – Grand Central, Great Northern, LNER and Thameslink.

The motoring expert RAC revealed that more than half of motorists prefer European roads to the UK.

Six in ten (62%) motorists said in a study that European roads are in better condition with fewer potholes than similar roads in the UK.

Only around 17% said UK roads are in better shape than those across the English Channel.

Hot weather warning on UK trains

    Noora Mykkanen

National Rail has issued a warning for extreme weather affecting services in England, Wales and Scotland.

It comes as hot weather and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday and Monday, with temperatures reaching up to 34°C in London over the weekend.

The predicted ‘extreme weather’ means heat could cause overhead lines to expand, sag or buckle, heavy rainfall with flooding on tracks and impact on the vital signalling equipment.

Passengers react to Kings Cross carnage

    Noora Mykkanen

The mass disruption at Kings Cross station has thrown many weekend plans into disarray as dozens of trains will be cancelled throughout Saturday.

Passengers took to social media to vent their frustration on X (formerly Twitter).

Another weekend of delays and cancellations from Kings Cross. They couldn’t run these services efficiently whether they were franchised, privatised, nationalised, or circumcised. For goodness sake! pic.twitter.com/tp8Py8Q13t

It’s our first ever game in the EFL and 6 trains have already been cancelled from Kings Cross to Leeds – happy first day of the season everyone x

Absolutely diabolical service at Kings Cross today. Sitting on a train which said on time right up until it’s depart time, then went to delayed then cancelled while everyone was still sat on it. How do you make such a mess week in week out!!
